Raleigh Relays, Day 2Kenyetta Iyevbele ended her freshman campaign last Saturday by capturing the women’s junior 800-meter race at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

“I wasn’t expecting all of this to happen my freshman year,” she says.

Iyevbele won the event with a time of 2:06.37. And in early June, she set the NC State record–and shaved 10 seconds off of her personal best–with a time of 2:04.83 in the outdoor preliminaries. She also won All-American honors in June.

Last week’s victory qualifies her to participate in the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships for the United States. That event takes place July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla.

The win was even more of a surprise for Iyevbele since she failed to qualify for the 800-meter race at the ACC Championships earlier this spring.

“It was devastating,” she says. “It helped me and motivated me in my workouts to qualify for regionals and then to qualify for nationals.”
