A bit of NC State basketball memorabilia that was headed for the dump will instead be auctioned off in Raleigh on Saturday.
The items up for sale are trophies, plaques and photos that were once presented to Willis Casey, a former athletics director and longtime swimming coach at NC State.
They include a 1957 Dixie Classic Tournament Manager Trophy, a 1957 ACC Tournament Manager Trophy and a Dixie Classic Founders Trophy. Also up for auction will be some swimming trophies and photos, as well as the 1952 Inter-Dormitory Trophy Cup.
Jason McCoon ’00, the owner of Tory Hill Auction Co., says the items were all heading to the dump before they were salvaged by someone who recognized them.
McCoon says the memorabilia was found in a storage unit on property that Casey used to own. The storage unit was being cleaned out, with most of the items being discarded, when someone noticed the trophies and other items. McCoon says the person was allowed to retrieve the memorabilia.
“It was real sooty and dirty when it was brought to us, but we polished them up good,” McCoon says.
The auction is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at 5301 Hillsborough St., Raleigh.
