We write about Bobby Hutchens ’82 in the summer issue of NC State magazine. Hutchens was one of the first college-educated engineers in NASCAR history and today directs the racing efforts of Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman at Stewart-Haas Racing in Kannapolis. He talked to contributing writer Arthur O. Murray about his work:

As director of competition, Hutchens . . . puts together the pit crews, guides the crew chiefs and supervises the engineering department. “It’s my responsibility if the cars aren’t running well or the crews don’t have what they need to be successful,” he says.

Hutchens has done a little racing himself over the years, and we dug up this clip from a race in 1992 (it also has alumnus Dr. Jerry Punch ’75):

We wrote about NC State alumni in NASCAR in 2002, and we talked with NASCAR Hall of Fame director Winston Kelley in 2007.
