Lessons from Coach Valvano

We occasionally get books in the mail from alumni authors and from publishers, and today brought Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up: The Inspiration of Jimmy V. It’s a short read that looks at each of the seven lessons former NC State men’s basketball coach Jim Valvano talked about in his speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards. The first lesson: cherish time, treasure the moment. Here’s what Coach Valvano had to say:

Time is very precious to me. I don’t know how much I have left and I have some things that I would like to say. Hopefully, at the end, I will have said something that will be important to other people too. . . . I urge all of you, all of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have.

The other six lessons: make a habit of wild enthusiasm; think, laugh and cry; live the big picture; out-dream yourself; believe in something passionately; and don’t ever give up.

Coach Valvano’s speech is posted below. A portion of the proceeds from the book goes to The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
