Roman Gabriel ’62 might just be the greatest Wolfpack football player ever. The 2-time All-American held multiple Wolfpack passing records, but he really helped to redefine the position of quarterback. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, “I was stronger than the linemen,” he told NC State magazine in 2007. Gabriel spent 16 seasons as a pro and was named the NFL’s MVP in 1969 after throwing for 2,549 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
