  Farm and Home Week (Raleigh, N.C.) J. W. (John William) Harrelson (1885-1955): Harrelson graduated from N.C. State College in 1905 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree, staying on as an Instructor in Mathematics. In 1934 Harrelson became Head of the Mathematics Department. He served as an Officer in the Army Reserves and saw active duty in both World Wars. Between wars, he served as Director of the Department of Conservation, North Carolina from 1929-1933. Harrelson was Chancellor of N.C. State College from 1934-1953. During his 19 year administration Harrelson led State College through its two largest building programs, including 7 dorms, 11 new and 4 renovated teaching-research-extension buildings, a new library, Reynolds Coliseum, a College Union, and a nuclear reactor for civilian training. The NCSC student population was 1,800 in 1934 when he became Chancellor, and grew to 4,000 students when he retired in 1953. Harrelson Hall, the round classroom/office building facing the Brickyard at NC State, was named in his honor. Pictured right to left recieving women guests are Mrs. Schaub, Dean I. O. Schaub, Mrs. Harrelson, Chancellor John W. Harrelson, Mrs. Scott, and Governor W. Kerr Scott.

His great grandfather, John Wade Shore, graduated from NC State in 1900. He is seated fifth from the left on the bottom row.

After two unsuccessful bids to win the Republican nomination for President of the U.S. in 1968 and 1976, he was nominated for and elected to become the 40th President of the United States.

Julius Valentine Hofmann (1882-1965): Julius Hofmann earned his Ph.D. in Forestry from the University of Minnesota. He was the first person in America to receive a doctorate in forestry. In 1929 he was appointed Head of the Department of Forestry at NC State, and Director of Forestry in 1932. He helped to establish forest preserves in North Carolina, and the largest forest in Eastern North Carolina is now named Hofmann Forest. After his retirement in 1948 from N. C. State College, Hofmann continued to serve as manager of the North Carolina Forestry Foundation.
